CHARRED HOUSE

E4, Highams Park, London

The Client

JustAnother Architects were appointed to refurbish this 1930’s terraced house by a young music, party, and outdoor loving family.

The Original

Situated in Area of Special Character, Highams Park, the house sits set back from a main road, a stones throw away from the Lake, walking distance to the forest yet close enough to the heart of the suburb to grab a daily flat white.

The Brief

They wanted something different. The brief called to reconfigure and increase the living space to accommodate this growing family. A special request was put in to open the back of the house to the garden, creating an indoor/outdoor entertaining space, to indulge their love of hosting plus create somewhere cosy to enjoy spiced rum in front of the fire pit. In addition, the client was keen to drop the curb and revamp the front garden, to enable off-street parking.

The Design

Our proposal reconfigured the rear ground floor of the property, creating a vast open plan kitchen/diner/living space plus a home office area and utility room, all housed under a black zinc off-axis pitched roof, finished with a row of openable skylights.

To create flow and fluidity from in to outdoors, glass panels extended across the rear walls flooding the space with light. A large, feature pergola extends across the full width of the garden in matching statement dark, charred timber.

Features include a handmade brick chimney, a cantilevered sandblasted wet cast seat, black metal sliding windows and off-pivot door, new slatted fencing, a wet cast BBQ area, and a charred sculpted timber seat.

In the client’s words…

We were blown away by Greg’s ideas and creativity. We knew the house had potential, but would never have come close to our dream vision without him on board. It feels like it was designed just for us. He really took the time to understand how we wanted the space to work for us, what we would use it for (hello parties) and what the moments were that we would really cherish. It was just really f****** cool! We would (and have) recommend Greg to absolutely anyone embarking on a renovation or build who want a house that truly reflects who they are.
