THE GLASS RETURN

N4, Finsbury Park, London

The Client

Interior Designer, Rebecca of Make Make My House Home, appointed Just Another Architect to collaborate on the design and planning for the side return of her family home.

The Original

Nestled in the heart of Finsbury Park, the house sits on a quiet street in close proximity to the park and hustle and bustle of the newly developed station area.

The Brief

The house already boasted a generous double reception room brimming with period features and charm, but the kitchen was tiny and overlooked by an oppressive, dark, north facing garden. Rebecca and partner Andy wanted to completely open up the back, flood it with light and create a bright, spacious, contemporary living space. In addition, Rebecca was keen to create a feature out of an existing exterior back window, incorporating into the design of the side return, so as not to lose light in the dining room.

The Design

Maximising light was impetrative, as was seamlessly fusing the contemporary extension with the fabric of the original building. The side return was built entirely of glass, impeccably abutted to the existing brick work with pristine detailing. The existing back wall was opened up with glass windows and doors, creating a sense of fluidity between in and outside.

In the client’s words…

“We were lucky enough to have Greg help us with the design and planning for our side return. We found him very professional, creative and more importantly gave us practical advice about what could be achieved. He kept the project moving along at a speed we were comfortable with, always checking to make sure we were happy as we progressed. I have no hesitation in recommending JAA to anyone.”
